April 18 in the Sanctuary

On Friday night, April 18, our church will gather in the sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. for a Tenebrae service. This year’s service will include the seven last words spoken from Jesus on the cross read from the scriptures. Between each word, a choral anthem is presented and a candle is extinguished, preparing us for the death of our Lord. Following the service everyone will leave in silence to contemplate Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. Good Friday is the day Jesus sacrificed his life and died on the cross. The service of Tenebrae, or “shadows” depicts the events that led to the crucifixion. Throughout the service, candles are extinguished to symbolize the flight of the disciples and the approaching hour of crucifixion. The service ends in darkness recalling the hours Christ was in the tomb.
