Promotion Sunday and Blessing of Students

Promotion Sunday and Blessing of Students

Sunday, August 19

For our children, celebrating birthdays and graduations is a big part of growing up. They look forward to these and other milestones with joy and eagerness. The preschoolers, children, and youth of Highland Hills get that same feeling when Promotion Sunday rolls around.

Sunday, August 19, is Promotion Sunday for our church. On this day, our students will begin the morning in their current Sunday School classes, and then at 10:30 a.m. we will promote those who are going into new classes and departments.

A highlight of this day will take place in worship when we present our first graders and seventh graders with a new Bible. Children and youth in this age group are taking giant steps into new ministry areas of our church. We like to mark this occasion with the gift of a new Bible from our congregation.

Also during worship on this Sunday, we will have a Blessing of Students. Preschoolers, children, and youth are encouraged to bring their school backpacks to worship for a time of individual blessing and to receive a gift to carry with them throughout the school year.

Our youth had an awesome week at Passport Furman in July and they are ready to share some of their experiences with our church family. On Wednesday, August 22, our youth will lead us during Prayer Service in a Passport Reflection Service. Let’s support our youth as we hear about their times of fun, service, and faith from Passport Mission Camp 2018.

Passport Summer Camp has become a tradition with the youth of Highland Hills. Throughout the years our youth have attended camps in New Orleans, Louisiana; Boston, Massachusetts; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Danville, Virginia. Like last year, this year they’ll be attending Passport in Greenville, South Carolina, at Furman University. During their week at Passport our youth will have the opportunity to serve the people of Greenville, along with developing lifelong friendships with other youth from around the country.

This year’s group from Highland Hills includes 16 youth and three chaperones. Our group will join up with 300 youth and adults from around the country for this Passport experience. The theme for Passport this year is Enough! The theme verse is: Jesus said to me, “My grace is enough for you, because power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (CEB) Daily themes include: God is Enough, I am Enough, There is Enough, and Enough Already! Throughout the week, the youth will discover that God’s love and grace is enough to meet all of their needs.

Our youth love their week of Passport mission camp and always work hard and make wonderful faith memories that last a lifetime. Please keep them and their leaders in your prayers as they travel, work, play, and share the love of our Lord with the people of Greenville, South Carolina.

Youth Sunday and Graduate Recognition

Youth Sunday and Graduate Recognition

Sunday, May 6

On Sunday morning, May 6, the youth of our church will be leading us in worship. As in years past, the youth will read scripture, pray, welcome worshipers, lead the children’s sermon, and play instruments. The Youth Choir will sing an arrangement of the song, My Lighthouse and Noah Horton will sing a solo. During the service, the high school seniors will be recognized, receive a gift, and share their future plans with the congregation. This year’s seniors include: Ellie Cleveland, Stratford Academy; Noah Horton, Howard High School; David Jolley, Southern Wake Academy in Holly Springs, North Carolina; Evans McCook, Stratford Academy; Anna Kate Medlin, Stratford Academy; Jake Newton, Mary Persons High School; and Jackson Williams, Jones County High School.

To celebrate the graduates, the youth will enjoy a pool party and cookout at the home of Ellie Cleveland from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. that afternoon. All HHBC youth are invited to attend.

The youth of Highland Hills are a vibrant part of our congregation and we look forward to their leading us in worship. Make plans to attend and support our youth on Sunday, May 6.
