I have never been to the Bahamas or Cancun, but last week I got to join about 90 of my favorite people on a trip to Promise Island. I didn't get to sip a drink at the water's edge with the island breezes blowing in my hair, and I have to admit that I did not feel particularly relaxed and refreshed after the week was over, but I did find myself feeling renewed by the reminders of God's faithfulness to me.
Last week we held our annual Vacation Bible School and this year's theme, "Adventures on Promise Island," allowed us to discover five of God's lifesaving promises. Every morning was spent singing about God's promises, watching silly skits about God's promises, and listening to Bible stories about God's promises. Each morning we reviewed Hebrews 10:23, "For He who has promised is faithful."
I memorized the five promises along with the kids, and as the days went by, I found myself thinking about God's faithfulness in my own life. I was telling the children, "You can count on God, no matter what," but I need that reminder as well. When I feel overwhelmed, I need Monday's promise, "I am with you." When I worry too much, I need Tuesday's promise, "I care about you." When I doubt my abilities, Wednesday's promise comes to my rescue, "I give you what you need." And when I feel frustrated by life, Thursday's promise, "I will save you" and Friday's promise, "I will answer you" remind me of God's love for me.
God's promises are simple enough for even a young child to understand, but only after living our lives day after day, week after week, and year after year, do we really understand the steadfastness of God's faithfulness to keep His promises. I needed that reminder. Maybe you do, too.
