Surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, our thirteen-member Highland Hills mission team is serving this week in rural, poverty-stricken McDowell County, West Virginia. Already we have torn out a wall and put in a new floor for an elderly resident, driven through the hollers and bottoms to round up children for Vacation Bible School, and fed nutritious meals to groups of children on summer break. We'll have lots of stories to tell when we return, but here are a few messages from the mission team while we are serving:
Thank you to everyone who donated supplies, we have been putting them to good use. Yesterday we made care packages for the children at VBS and the senior adults at a nursing home. We're working really hard, but we're also having a lot of fun! Whatever happens in West Virginia...stays in West Virginia. :)
It was a joy today to offer the nursing home residents a chance to sing the old hymns that they love. I felt the presence of God when I looked at their smiling faces.
We are helping to renovate a home for a woman with a handicapped son. We removed an interior wall and we are installing new flooring. Steve Brown and Gene Cook also washed the vinyl siding on her house, and it really made a difference! We have already been blessed in many ways, and we have also learned that flexibility is a virtue!
Please continue to pray for our team as we finish out this week of ministry and service in West Virginia. We look forward to telling you more about the ways that we have seen God at work in this place when we return.
