This is it… prime planning season for VBS!

We selected the curriculum and recruited the teachers months ago but these three weeks before Vacation Bible School are the height of planning season. Each day is filled with a long to-do list of preparations that must be checked off before July 11 arrives. We’re painting a surf shack, making class signs, rehearsing skits, and gathering flip flops, pool noodles, skim boards, and beach umbrellas to transform our church into a cool surfer’s beach. As we count down the days to the beginning of this year’s Surf Shack VBS, we will wonder often if we have enough time to get it all done. And sometimes we might even wonder if all of the time and effort and planning and preparation are worth it.

But on Monday morning, July 11, when a crowd of excited and energetic preschoolers and children bounce and bob into the chapel…when we see the smiles on their faces and hear their laughter…when they begin to sing songs about God’s amazing love for us…when they learn to trust God’s awesome promises… it’s all worth it. The purpose behind the planning and preparation and the extra hours of work is all clear. We don’t do VBS to show off our decorating skills or craftiness. The fun theme and creative decorations are just ways to get children excited about learning about God’s love. The Bible stories, skits, crafts, and everything in between points to the truth of God’s love and God’s promises for each one of us.

So bring your children, grandchildren, or neighbor’s children to Surf Shack VBS on July 11 – 15. They’ll discover more than just a fun time at a cool surfer’s beach…they’ll discover that God’s amazing love is real and constant and personal just for them!
