Space for music...

The music ministries of Highland Hills include everyone. From congregational singing, to the Celebrating Grace Hymnal, to the Children’s Choirs’ spring musical, everyone is involved in the music of the church. Our Sunday morning worship services consist of traditional hymns accompanied by the pipe organ, choral music presented by the Sanctuary Choir, and occasional solos, quartets, ensembles and instrumental music.

Some of the special services we enjoy include the Sundays of Advent, the Christmas Eve organ recital and candlelight service, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Men’s Day, Women’s Day, Children’s Sunday, and Youth Sunday. We also have a Taize Service on the third Tuesday evening of each month in our chapel.

The Sanctuary Choir of Highland Hills has an expansive repertoire of music that they sing on Sunday mornings including classical, gospel, contemporary, and spiritual anthems. They also sing a major work or cantata each Christmas and Easter. They rehearse each Wednesday evening at 7:10 p.m.

The Youth Choir, consisting of 7th – 12th graders, not only enjoy singing on Youth Sunday and for other special services, they also enjoy joining their voices with other youth choirs throughout the Southeast forming the Jubilate Festival Singers. This joint choir has been together since 1994 and the Highland Hills Youth Choir has been with them since the beginning. The choir has a retreat every January and then tours for a week each summer. Past tours have taken them to Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington DC.

The Children’s Choirs consist of 4 year olds – 6th graders. The 4 and 5 year old choir has a special time of music each week where they learn to sing together and sing a few times each year during worship. The 1st – 6th graders have music education in the fall, which includes singing for Children’s Sunday, and a special Children’s Christmas program. In the spring each year they work on a Children’s Musical, which is presented in May.

The 4th – 6th graders also make up the Children’s Hand Chime Choir, which plays throughout the year. Our Youth and Children’s Choirs rehearse each Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

The church’s Adult Handbell Choir rehearses throughout the fall, winter, and spring and plays occasionally on Sunday mornings and for special services. The Handbell Choir rehearses each Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Music has always been an important part of the life and worship of Highland Hills. There is something for everyone in the music ministries of Highland Hills.

What's Up for Children's Choir

When the calendar turns to January, the children of Highland Hills know that it is time to begin work on their spring musical.  On Wednesday, January 4 at 5:00 p.m. the children in 1-6 grade are invited to a Musical Premier Party where they will get a glimpse of this year’s musical that will be presented in May.

The musical that has been chosen for this year is a fun and heartwarming version of a Bible story that we all know and love.  It is titled, “What’s Up Zak?” and is the familiar tale of Zacchaeus.  The story is retold as one rich but lonely tax collector casts his ego aside and climbs a tree for just one glimpse of Jesus.  The songs are funny and lively and will provide our Children’s Choir with a great time of musical and biblical learning.  It is a wonderful story for all believers.

The opportunity to participate in this musical is open to all 1-6 graders!  Rehearsals will be held each Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. beginning on January 4.  If your child hasn’t been a participant in children’s choirs in the past, now is great time to get started and join this wonderful group of talented singers.
