Pastor

Jake, a native of Columbus, Georgia, is a recent transplant to Macon from Canton, Georgia, where he served as pastor of Heritage Baptist Fellowship. He is a graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he met his wife, Erin. After they married in 2000, Jake began seminary at Duke University, where he received an M.Div. Jake is a graduate of the Pastoral Residency program of Wilshire Baptist Church. In 2013, he completed a Doctorate of Ministry at Mercer University’s James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology.

Jake and Erin have served in several churches before coming to Highland Hills. Erin, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, enjoys teaching, writing, and being with people. She is a graduate of Samford University and received an M.Div. from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 2008. Jake also enjoys weightlifting, cooking, hosting friends in their home, laughing, watching movies, and playing with their lovable dog, Annabelle. The Halls find their greatest joy in spending time with people, and helping them to become Christ followers. Jake and Erin have a son, Logan, and love spending time with this two-year-old ball of energy.

Cass DuCharme

Associate Pastor, Music & Youth

Cass DuCharme became the Minister of Music at Highland Hills in October of 1992. In October of 2005, he added the youth ministry of the church to his resume. He is married to Ruth Sprayberry DuCharme, the Children’s Minister at Highland Hills and has two children, Caitlyn, a junior at Mercer University and Chase, a senior at Howard High School.

Cass was born in Sanford, Maine, and moved to Brandon, Florida, as a child where he spent his formative years. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Carson-Newman College and a Master of Church Music degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Cass enjoys traveling, jogging, spending quality time with Ruth and the kids, an occasional round of golf, playing with his dogs Chip and Coda, and eating breakfast at Waffle House with his buddies every Thursday morning. He is also an avid University of Florida football fan. Go Gators!

Cass’ prayer for our church is for it to continue to nurture the faith of our young people and expand the faith of our older members. To share God’s love and minister to the people within the walls of the church, the surrounding area, and the world through ministry, missions, worship, and love.

Ruth DuCharme

Minister to Children

Ruth DuCharme has served as Minister to Children at Highland Hills Baptist Church since May of 1995.  She is married to Cass DuCharme, the Associate Pastor of Highland Hills Baptist Church.  They have one daughter, Caitlyn, who is a junior at Mercer University, and a son, Chase, who is a senior at Howard High School.

Ruth was born and raised in Newnan, Georgia, around her family's barbecue restaurant, Sprayberry’s BBQ.  She is a graduate of Tift College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Church Music and of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters in Church Music degree.  She was ordained to the ministry by Highland Hills in August of 2002.

Other professional involvements for Ruth include writing the children’s Sunday School curriculum for Highland Hills, writing the children’s portion of the Annual Bible Study curriculum for Smyth and Helwys Publishing, and teaching private guitar lessons.

Outside of her professional involvement, Ruth enjoys playing tennis, reading good books, being involved in her children’s schools, attending sporting events (particularly Georgia Tech), and music.

Ministering to the children of Highland Hills is a fun and rewarding ministry.  Children are not only the future of the church—they are the present.  They bring life and enthusiasm to this fellowship and a hope that Highland Hills Baptist Church will always be a place that honors God through worship and service.

Carol Brown

Director of Preschool Ministries

Carol Brown has served as Director of Preschool Ministries at Highland Hills since May of 1995. She is married to Dr. Steve Brown, who is the Associate Dean of Student Services at Mercer University. They have two sons: Burgess, a senior at Mercer University and Hudson, a sophomore at American University.

Carol spent her childhood years in Spartanburg, South Carolina, as the daughter of a Baptist minister of education and an elementary school principal. She is a graduate of Furman University with a degree in business and psychology. In addition to her work at Highland Hills, Carol has written preschool Sunday School curriculum for Smyth & Helwys Publishing, Inc. and has been published in Children’s Ministry Magazine. Currently, she is the copy editor for Spark and Form, the preschool and children's mission curriculum published by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

At Highland Hills, Carol seeks to minister to preschoolers and their families by providing a warm, caring environment where children can see God’s love through the love of their teachers. When asked for her thoughts on ministering to preschoolers, Carol said, “I see each child as a gift from God and I count it a blessing to be a part of their lives in even a small way.  The simple faith of our preschoolers inspires me and makes it a joy to serve at Highland Hills.”

Gerald Carper

Organist

Gerald N. Carper came to Highland Hills as Organist in August of 1987. Gerald received his Bachelor of Music degree from Georgia Southern University and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia. He teaches piano and organ in the Macon community and serves as the Treasurer of the Macon Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Highland Hills enjoys Gerald's leadership on the sanctuary pipe organ, and looks forward to Gerald's annual organ recital that precedes the Christmas Eve service.

Debbie Buchanan

Office Manager

Debbie Buchanan began working as Church Secretary at Highland Hills in June of 2002. In March of 2009, Debbie added the job of Financial Secretary to her responsibilities. In November 2013 she became Office Manager. She is married to Russell Buchanan, and they have three children: a daughter Christine, married with a daughter Emma born in September 2012; a daughter Katie, married with a son Logan born in February of 2009 and a daughter Leah  born in June of 2013; and a son Ryan, a student at Macon State College.

Both of Debbie's daughters, Christine and Katie, served as HHBC summer interns for the Preschool and Children's ministries during their college years.

Debbie and Russell enjoy traveling to a variety of fun locations for camping, fishing, and boating. She also uses her spare time to indulge in photography and scrapbooking.

Caitlin Childers

Youth Intern

Caitlin Childers came to Highland Hills as Youth Intern in May of 2013 and began working in the church office as a Ministry Associate in February of 2014. Caitlin received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Mercer University. She is a military child who spent the most time in Peachtree City, Georgia. She is engaged to Ethan Brown, someone she met way back in fourth grade Bible drill. They both intend to attend seminary and pursue ministry as a vocation.
