HHBC has been supporting Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School on Shurling Drive for a little over a year. There are two components to our help: reading tutoring and teacher/staff support. During the past year, 16 members of HHBC have been involved in serving three Teacher Appreciation luncheons. Our Youth provided Valentines gift bags and Erin Hall’s Sunday School class packed Teacher Appreciation Week goodie bags. We also gave the MLK Teacher of the Year a gift certificate. Rachel Greco has provided guidance to Volunteer Services Coordinator, Chiquita Glover, to help establish a PTO at the school.

Next year, we plan to expand our services. In addition to four Teacher Appreciation luncheons and celebrating more holidays with gift bags, there will be opportunities for the HHBC congregation to provide school supplies for students whose parents can’t afford even the basics. Teachers and staff have also been given the opportunity to provide a Wish List (materials, equipment or assistance) to better equip them to provide for their students.

MLK Volunteer Services Coordinator Chiquita Glover hopes to speak at Family Night this fall to tell us other ways in which we can support and improve MLK, including mentoring services.
