Sweet Summer

Sweet Summer

by Cass DuCharme

Fifty years ago this summer my mom, dad, brothers, sisters and I moved from Wells, Maine, to Brandon, Florida. It was the summer of ’69 and I was 8 years old. Little did I know at the time how iconic that summer would become for our country. I remember watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon while watching a little 13-inch black and white TV, and seeing news reports of the Woodstock music festival, narrated by Walter Cronkite. I remember how hot it was in Florida compared to Maine summers. That was a sweet summer that I’ll never forget.

As many of you know, I am the Sticky Note king. My desk and computer, yes, computer, are filled with sticky notes. These notes help me navigate through my days reminding me of all of the tasks I need to complete. Today’s sticky note says, “Write Enewsletter article this week”. So, that’s what I’m doing.

Did you know that singing is good for your health? Studies have shown for years that singing, especially in a choral group, is great for your health. The actual act of singing helps your breathing, your posture, your blood pressure, your heart, and your brain.

For those of you who may not have a TV, radio, computer, cell phone, iPad, etc., you may not have known that there was a little wedding in England last Saturday. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. It was an international affair. Prince Harry’s beautiful bride is from the USA, and because of that, this Royal Wedding was like no other in history. Because of the time difference, one person in my house was up at 4:00 a.m., watching all of the famous people take their places in the church getting ready for the big affair. I will admit, I did get up at 7:00 a.m. to see it live, but I wasn’t the one up at 4:00 a.m.

Last Friday night from 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m., 28 youth and 8 adults attended the all-night Youth Lock-In at the church. The first five hours included a citywide scavenger hunt, and bowling, pizza, laser tag, and bumper cars at Pin Strikes. At around 1:00 a.m. we got back to the church, the adults who had been the drivers went home to get some sleep and three of us stayed with the youth as we continued the fun.

Twenty-five years ago, God provided a path that brought us together. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday that the Minister of Music Search Committee came to Buies Creek, NC and began the process that would bring us to Macon, GA and Highland Hills Baptist Church. However, when I look in the mirror and see the gray hairs and wrinkles I realize that a lot of time has gone by, but the years have been good and fruitful as we have ministered and worshipped together.

Well, well, well, you all pulled one over on me. One way to surprise someone on their anniversary is to have the party early. Five months early to be exact!

What I thought was going to be the conclusion to a wonderful Jubilate choir tour, turned out to be a very sweet surprise lunch and roasting of yours truly.
