Finding the Joy of Advent

By Rev. Caitlin Childers Brown

Pastor and Minister of Service & Community

During Advent we have been working through the question, How does a weary world rejoice? The theme has directed our worship, the art on our walls, and the Advent devotional offerings. I’ve expected to encounter the question in these formal settings, but have been surprised to see that they’ve also been very lived experiences as we go through the holiday season. I think the Holy Spirit is funny like that sometimes…

This past Sunday, we discussed Finding Joy in Connection right as we began a week of many church Christmas parties. These parties were for Sunday School classes, the Sanctuary Choir, and even the All Church Christmas Party. If you’ve attended one or many of these parties this week, you’ve probably noticed what I have seen: we really do find joy in our connections. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt, swapped silly stories and memories with members across the table, and enjoyed many, many, good covered dishes. At it’s best, Highland Hills is a place that really knows how to celebrate being with one another.

Living this Sunday lesson all week, my weary soul feels a little lighter. My endless to-do list is a little lighter because of the moments we have shared together. There is something so hopeful, restorative, and encouraging about the world when a few of us can gather and have a good celebration—maybe that’s why Jesus did so much of his ministry around the table.

I hope as you go through the bustle, the emotions, and the weariness of the holiday season that you too find moments of joy in connection. Whether it is in a good conversation with a friend or a stranger, may this Advent season open your heart to connection.

P.S. If you missed Wednesday’s party but still want a time of joy in connection, this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. we will have our Carols and Cocoa event, even if it rains! In case of rain, we will be inside, singing carols around the piano. Come join in the fun!
