The Impact of Rise Against Hunger, Sunday, May 22

Highland Hills has been involved with the Rise Against Hunger organization for many years. In the early days, it was called “Stop Hunger Now.” You may be familiar with the meal packing events that we have held at HHBC but not fully understand the impact that this work has on the global hunger crisis. Rise Against Hunger works as a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives, and responding to emergencies.

The organization’s founder, Ray Buchanan, traces its beginnings to his time serving as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War. Ray quickly recognized that accomplishing a mission required “commitment to something larger than yourself.” Later as a United Methodist minister, Ray embraced the vision of a world without hunger and co-founded Stop Hunger Now in 1998 alongside and with generous donor support from entrepreneur John Hewitt. Stop Hunger Now rebranded to become Rise Against Hunger in 2017.

You may wonder why Rise Against Hunger uses volunteers like us to package meals instead of using automated production. Rise Against Hunger involves volunteers because they want to engage as many people as possible in the movement to eradicate hunger. The meal packing events also serve as a platform to educate people about hunger, what they can do about it, and to inspire them to take further action. Creating such a movement through educating people about the issue is essential to finding a way to end hunger in our lifetime.

HHBC will be hosting a meal packing event this Sunday, May 22, at 5:00 p.m. in the Great Room. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so at the button below or by calling the church office. Join us to rise up against hunger!
