Stop the World—I Want to Get Off!

Stop the World —I Want to Get Off!, the title of an award-winning play popular in the 1960s, resonates with us today when, in a few short weeks, the world as we know it has been wrenched from our grasp. We know our world will be radically changed after the corona-19 crisis is over, and that life will never be the same.

Change means to make or become different; it suggests that the difference is a fundamental or complete change in the appearance, shape or nature of a thing or person.

Change is inevitable, but it is usually evolutionary. Unfortunately, in these unprecedented times, we are rushing into the dark unknown with the speed of a high-speed train. Many of us fear change in any form; others are more amenable. However, not even the most adaptable of us is capable of adjusting to the rapidly escalating changes in our world today, not just daily but hourly. We resist change and want things to be as they were before.

Concerns are justified during these troubling times. We are apprehensive about our health and that of our loved ones; we are worried about our financial security; unable to be with family and friends, we are suffering from loneliness in our isolation. However, Psalm 46:1-2 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

If you are worried about changes in your life that seems overwhelming, a Stephen Minister is available to listen to your concerns.
