The Good Things of October

I have a confession to make: I’m one of those people with a color-coded calendar. Call me a nerd, accuse me of being Type A. It’s fine, and you’re probably right. My rainbow calendar helps keep my house running smoothly. At a quick glance at this calendar, I can tell you if I have school work to do, an event to attend, a doctor’s appointment scheduled, or plans with friends at any given time. I fear I must also confess that this type of organization does not come naturally for me. My calendar was created around the time I started seminary and realized that it’s actually really easy to miss a homework assignment if you can’t remember where you wrote the due date. This will come as no shock, but finishing Greek homework in thirty minutes before class starts is not exactly easy. One lesson learned later, I have a colorful calendar that helps me remember everything that’s going on. It’s even Barbie Dreamhouse themed—staying organized can still be fun!

October is one of those months where calendars often get full. There’s so much going on around town between the fair and all of the fun things Macon does for October, the return of football, midterms that need writing (or grading), and the good weather that makes you want to stay outside as long as possible. The calendar at Highland Hills is no exception! Our church calendar is getting filled with lots of delightful things happening this October. We have a lot going on between special services, annual events, and opportunities to gather together as a community.

This Sunday in worship we will celebrate Missions Sunday. Our Missions and Outreach Committee will share about all of the good work Highland Hills has done around the community over the past year, from backpack collections to teacher breakfasts to many, many meals packed for Loaves and Fishes. We’ll also hear from our global mission partners about all the good work they are doing in Uganda, the Philippines, and Japan.

On October 26, we have our annual Fall Family Fest. This is one of my favorite events Highland Hills hosts each year! We will have inflatables, a cake walk, all kinds of games, face painting, snacks, and of course the beloved Shiver Shack shaved ice truck. The courtyard will be filled with laughter as we share in the joy of the season with our neighborhood. The fall festival is one of many ways that we can be a loving presence in our community.

I hope you will consider joining us for some of the good things going on this October, whether it’s Mission Sunday, the Fall Family Fest, or one of the many chances to gather in between. There’s still time to add it to your calendar, in whatever color you choose!
