I have never claimed to be called to be a children’s minister, nor would I ever want to compare my skills with the great children ministers who have roamed our halls—they're just different. Sometimes the church work includes all sorts of things we don’t claim to be good at- from changing light bulbs to planning a VBS. So as we looked to the summer I offered to plan our version of Vacation Bible School, knowing it was uncharted territory for me. Sometimes we do things simply because it's the right step, but unsure how it will work out.
In that hopeful naivete, I have been delighted and surprised by this week of Wild Wonder. I have been surprised by the good questions that I've heard the kids ask. They seem to be soaking up like little sponges the stories of scripture and creation. They really seem to understand God made all the world and called it good. Their laughter and silliness has reinvigorated all of us, in a way that only pure fun can. If you see one of our children this week, ask them about what they've learned. It's a lot! I got excited the other day to consider—many of these kids will remember this camp, and they'll remember just how God is present in this different way.
I have also been delighted at the ways our church folks have shown up ready to serve, filling in any gaps. I've been especially grateful for all the ways people have adapted the material to best fit our children. Our church members have gone above and beyond to make sure they are really caring for the kids in our camp, and it shows. They’ve also cared for this heavily pregnant minister—getting out there and running around when I can barely handle any heat. I see the love of Christ in their willingness to sweat, be covered in bug spray, and hold sweet little hands as they explore our grounds and the material. Camp Wild Wonder has been a team endeavor, and everyone has made a big difference.
The halls of Highland Hills have been alive this week with the sounds of wonder, curiosity, and good stories of our faith. For that and so much more, I say, thanks be to God for new things!

One Very Tired Pastor
